Howard Spiegler was the keynote speaker for Kohelet Yeshiva’s CLE event on Nazi Looted Art and the Legal Battle for Justice. The discussion focused on the legal battle for Egon Schiele’s “Portrait of Wally,” a beguiling portrait of the Austrian artist’s red-haired mistress, which was seized from Lea Bondi by a Nazi. After sixty years, the painting surfaced on the walls of the Museum of Modern art (MoMA), triggering a historic court case that pitted the Manhattan District Attorney, the United States Government and Howard Spiegler, on behalf of the heirs of Lea Bondi, against MoMA and a major Austrian Museum.
