The Battle to Recover Stolen Holocaust-Era Artwork

As part of its Distinguished Speaker Series, Concord Law School at Purdue University Global presented a live discussion on the Holocaust Expropriated Art Recovery (HEAR) Act and cases regarding Holocaust-era art and property recovery claims. The featured speakers were Mary-Christine “M.C.” Sungaila, partner at Haynes and Boone, LLP; Lawrence M. Kaye, art law specialist at Herrick, Feinstein LLP; and Martin Pritikin, Dean of Concord Law School. The panel discussed Sungaila's and Kaye’s recent petition to the U.S. Supreme Court to consider whether New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art must return a Picasso masterwork, “The Actor,” which was owned by a Jewish couple forced to sell the painting at a steep discount to fund their escape from Nazi persecution and legal issues related to the HEAR Act.
